How Long Does a Dental Crown Take? Dental Crown Treatment Timeline

In order to provide patients with the best possible results, a dental crown from Planes Dental Arts can be completed in two appointments. Patients interested in a dental implant-supported crown will require additional treatment before Dr. Planes can place a permanent crown. For the majority of patients, however, restoring your smile with a dental crown includes:
Treatment from start to finish takes about three weeks.
Treatment from start to finish takes about three weeks.

Initial Exam

During your first appointment, Dr. Planes will examine your compromised tooth to determine the best treatment solution for your needs.

Dr. Planes will remove the damaged or decayed portions of the affected tooth. Extensive decay may require a root canal if the tooth has become infected. Following treatment, Dr. Planes will reshape and resize the tooth to create a stable base for your crown.

Using traditional impression putty, Dr. Planes will create a detailed mold of your smile. This casting will be sent off to our dental lab in order to create a crown that fits perfectly with your surrounding teeth.

Temporary Crown

Our dentist will place a temporary crown made of porcelain to protect your prepared tooth while your restoration is being made.

It takes two to three weeks for a master ceramicist to craft your new crown. Hand finishing details will ensure your new restoration mimics the appearance of your natural tooth for seamless integration.

Permanent Crown

Once your final restoration is completed, you can return to our dental office where Dr. Planes will remove your porcelain temporary crown. He will test fit your new permanent crown and make any necessary adjustments to achieve a proper fit and functional bite.

Final Restoration

Once you and Dr. Planes are happy with the fit and function of your new crown, he will permanently bond your crown using dental cement. Following final placement, no downtime is required. You may experience mild sensitivity, but it should resolve itself in a couple of days.
