Stained, yellowed, or discolored teeth can detract from the beauty of a smile. Professional teeth whitening can deliver dramatic results and enhance your overall appearance. At our Vero Beach, FL, practice, Dr. Alex Planes offers Zoom!® in-office and Opalescence® take-home teeth whitening options. These treatments can erase deep stains and lighten your teeth by several shades.
As long as you have healthy teeth and gums, you are likely a candidate for teeth whitening, as it is a low-risk procedure. However, there are certain conditions or factors that could hinder your eligibility. For example, teeth whitening is not effective on porcelain or composite resin. Therefore, if you have veneers, crowns, or bridges, you will likely need to replace your restorations in order to brighten your smile. Additionally, if you suffer from dental erosion or tooth sensitivity, you may not be eligible for teeth whitening.
No matter which option you choose, you will be well on your way to a brighter, whiter, healthier looking smile!
Furthermore, whitening only works for extrinsic stains, which are caused by environmental factors. Intrinsic stains affect the deeper layers of the teeth and do not generally respond to bleaching. If you have intrinsic stains, you may be better suited for dental bonding or porcelain veneers.
There are many reasons why the teeth can become discolored. Some of the most common causes include:
At Planes Dental Arts, we offer two types of teeth whitening treatments: Zoom! and Opalescence.
Patients who are seeking an instantaneously brighter smile can undergo Zoom! in-office teeth whitening. This option is great for patients who want to improve their smile for an upcoming event, like a wedding or reunion. Before beginning, your hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and food deposits. Next, a barrier will be placed over the gums to protect them from the concentrated bleaching gel. The clinician will then apply the whitening gel to the teeth, ensuring that all surfaces are evenly covered. The gel will be left on the teeth and exposed to a special blue light for about 15 minutes. The gel is then rinsed off and reapplied. This process is generally completed about three times to achieve the desired results.
Those who wish to brighten their smile at their convenience can choose Opalescence take-home whitening kits. Though this process takes longer compared to our in-office treatment, you can still achieve dazzling results.
Before you can begin whitening your teeth, Dr. Planes will make you a set of custom bleaching trays. He will also choose a whitening gel appropriate for your needs. While this hydrogen peroxide gel is similar to the one used during our in-office treatment, it is not as concentrated. You will dispense the gel into the bleaching trays, then wear the trays for a prescribed amount of time.
No matter which option you choose, you will be well on your way to a brighter, whiter, healthier looking smile! Best of all, when you refer another patient, you will receive a complimentary take-home whitening kit.
