Strengthen Your Smile with a Dental Crown
A dental crown can restore the appearance and strength of a tooth compromised by damage or decay. At Planes Dental Arts in Port St. Lucie and Vero Beach, FL, we provide exclusively metal-free crowns using advanced materials, such as zirconia and IPS e.max®. Our crowns mimic the light-reflective qualities of natural teeth and are colored to blend seamlessly into your smile. Dr. Alex Planes is a skilled dentist who uses conservative methods to place crowns, whether as a cap over a tooth or as a tooth replacement solution with dental implants. He is so convinced of the quality of his restorations that he guarantees crowns for at least three years with maintenance.
What Is a Dental Crown?
Also known as a cap, a crown fits over the top of a tooth to provide support and protection. Typically made from dental ceramic or a similar tooth-colored material, crowns are highly versatile. A crown can:
- Protect a tooth after a root canal
- Restore a broken or worn tooth
- Cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
- Support a dental bridge
- Protect a weakened tooth
- Replace a single tooth with a dental implant
Dental crowns can restore the shape, size, strength, and appearance of a single tooth. While they are mostly used as a restorative treatment for damaged or decayed teeth, Dr. Planes places crowns for cosmetic reasons as well.
Dr. Planes will first reshape the tooth to accommodate a dental crown.
Preparing for Your Crown
During your initial appointment, Dr. Planes will examine your smile and take x-rays. Using these scans, he can assess the health of your dental roots and jawbone. Dr. Planes can also discuss your treatment options and explain the different crown materials we offer at our office. If you decide to proceed with a crown, Dr. Planes will need to prepare your tooth for placement.
For patients who take care of their crowns and attend regular exams at our office, Dr. Planes guarantees his crowns for at least three years.
During the preparation process, Dr. Planes will numb your tooth and then file down the chewing surface and sides of your tooth. This step ensures your crown fits comfortably in your smile without appearing bulky. While many patients can undergo this process with only local anesthetic, Dr. Planes offers sedation options to ensure your comfort.
Receiving Your Crown
Once your tooth is prepared, we will take an impression and send it to our lab for fabrication. It typically takes one to two weeks for the lab to finish a crown. We may fit you with a temporary crown to wear during this time to reduce sensitivity and protect your prepared tooth.
During your second visit, Dr. Planes will remove the temporary crown and check the fit and feel of your final restoration. He can make minor adjustments to the shape and color at this time. When you are satisfied with the appearance and feel of your crown, Dr. Planes will bond it to your tooth to reveal your fully restored smile.
