We like to use sedation on a very afraid patient or patients that are very apprehensive of coming to the dental office. My preferred method is oral sedation. It's just so much easier to monitor. A lot of doctors like to do a combination of oral sedation with nitrous, and then there's oral surgeons and periodontists that like to do IV sedation and completely put them in a twilight zone. In order to provide sedation, you have to be certified. There's continuing education which a doctor can proceed, but not all dentists can do IV sedation. It requires additional training and you have to be certified by the state. In this office, we can provide oral sedation as well as IV sedation. I like to tell the patient, "You will not remember anything that takes place while you're on sedation. You might be apprehensive, but by the time the procedure is done and you wake up the next day or even a couple of hours later, you won't remember anything." Most patients don't like to have to remember anything in the dental chair especially the noise of the high speed.
